Releasing Perfectionism And Stop Emotional Eating

You may be curious about how to begin releasing perfectionism and stop emotional eating If you’ve ever used food to fill a void in your life. You try to please people and be perfect at your own expense. Then, exhausted and running on empty after work, you turn to sweets, chips, or alcohol for a moment of pleasure. Has this ever happened to you?  What can you do to start releasing perfectionism and stop emotional eating?

Laura’s Story

I’m sitting in my office. One day I get a call from a lady named Laura. She’s a psychotherapist in private practice and she works with people all day and helps them get clear so they can feel less stressed and be more productive.

So when Laura comes to me, she says she doesn’t want another failed attempt at a diet and getting her eating under control. She doesn’t want to fall off the wagon and go back to old habits.

She says she wants strategies so she won’t forage in the pantry for food, snack, and eat from stress, emotions, or boredom.  She wants to see herself succeed for more than a month and have the confidence that this could work.

As a result of serving her clients, the one thing Laura neglected was that she needed to be nurtured after work. Instead, she started eating candy, and cookies while she tended her three kids after work.  When we did a Sweet Life Wellness analysis and looked at her life, we found she needed nurturing. What was missing was nourishment for herself.

Laura did not feel enough love and was scared to give voice to it because she’s a wife, mom, psychotherapist and she should have it all together and she believes she should be perfect. She’s trying to be perfect. That’s the thing that trips all of us up—trying to be perfect.

What Laura did to begin releasing her perfectionism and stop emotional eating was to ask her babysitter to stay an extra hour so she could take a yoga class after work.

What we need instead of trying to be perfect, is to ease up a bit and give ourselves a little breathing space.  All we need is a little space to nourish ourselves.

You’re an amazing woman. You handle everything from the husband to the children to the house to your business or career. But Whatever you do, you’re still unfulfilled and you’re using sugar and chips and alcohol to fill that void in your life. You’re not hungry. But you eat anyway. There are better ways of living a healthy life. We know we have tremendous value. We just need a little bit of help getting there.
