Welcome, today we are talking about how to slow down and prevent overeating. This is the fourth video in our series on the Five Seps to Sop Being Controlled by Food. Hi, I’m Kay Loughrey, Maryland, nutritionist, and dietitian, helping you build a healthy relationship with food. In the previous videos in this series, we shared a summary of the five Steps, the Triggers, and the Food Cravings. Today we’re talking about how to slow down, stop going into autopilot, and caving into food cravings.

We feature Jenny, one of my previous weight loss coaching clients. When Jenny came to me, she told me that what triggered her food cravings was when she walked into the kitchen to make dinner after work. She snacked as she cooked dinner with you name it cheese, crackers, and nuts. By the time she ate dinner, she was beyond full and felt a lot of regret. We did an assessment and created a strategy for her that worked. The next day instead of snacking while she cooked, she did something that totally disrupted her old pattern. She paused and asked these two questions. She asked herself, “Am I hungry?” And secondly, “Is it worth it not to snack and not feel as stressed, and feel better about myself?”

What just happened here? How she disrupted her old pattern was by pausing and slowing down to answer her two questions. She answered,  “No, I’m not hungry,” and “Yes, it is worth it not to snack instead of going into a flight response and overeating. When I don’t snack, I won’t feel stressed, and I’ll feel better about myself. In the next video, we’ll see what else Jenny did to respond differently to her food cravings.
