This week, our blog explores practical ways to make sustainable well-being part of everyday life. The challenge is learning to listen to your body’s signals and responding to fatigue before it drives you toward default choices rather than intentional ones.
Senior leaders frequently experience unrelenting demands that make it easy to override what their body is telling them. Meals are skipped. Fatigue is ignored. Stress becomes the normal background of the day. Healthy routines give way to immediate demands.
One client, Justin, understood this all too well. As explored in Chapter 16, Feeling Depleted, from my book Happy Life at a Healthy Weight, he owned a growing business that demanded nearly all of his attention. He skipped meals throughout the day, often avoided dinner with his family, and found himself binge eating at night. At just thirty-eight years old, he walked with a cane because of a knee injury and believed surgery was inevitable. More painful still, he told me, “I can’t be the dad I want to be.”
Justin’s story wasn’t really about food. It was about becoming disconnected from the messages his body had been sending for years.
Many of us do the same thing.
When deadlines pile up or responsibilities multiply, our body’s signals begin to feel like interruptions rather than valuable information. We push through hunger, ignore exhaustion, and attempt to manage stress by eating, drinking, or simply working longer hours. Over time, those small choices gradually reduce our energy, resilience, and capacity to lead well.
One of the most important lessons I have learned both personally and professionally is that your body is not working against you. It is working to protect you.
Rather than fighting your body or trying to overpower it with willpower, begin by collaborating with it.
A simple place to start is by paying attention to three everyday L:
- Hungry? Nourish yourself before you become depleted.
- Tired? Pause, rest, or refresh before exhaustion makes decisions for you.
- Stressed? Create a stress recovery routine instead of relying on food, alcohol, or overwork to cope.
These sound almost too simple, yet they form the foundation of sustainable health. Small, consistent responses to your body’s needs are far more effective than trying to follow a perfect plan that falls apart during busy weeks.
As Justin gradually stopped skipping meals, ate dinner with his family, and responded differently to stress, remarkable things happened. He no longer needed knee surgery, lost one hundred pounds, and began exercising regularly. Most importantly, Justin became the father he wanted to be.
The transformation didn’t begin with a diet.
It began by listening.
This week, notice what your body may already be trying to tell you. Is it asking for nourishment? Rest? Recovery? A moment to breathe?
Every ignored signal has a cost.
Every respected signal strengthens your capacity to lead well and live well.
