Choosing a Safe and Successful Weight Loss Program From Gaithersburg Nutritionist Kay Loughrey

In this blog, we will be discussing tips for choosing a safe and successful weight loss program. As we have mentioned in previous blogs this month, managing weight and physical activity are two key points when it comes to preventing and/or managing diabetes and other diseases. As such, this blog will list some points to consider when deciding on a weight loss program.

Self Assess Your Physical Activity

One thing you want to pay attention to is your current level of fitness. Overdoing yourself when exercising can end up causing more harm than good. Try and assess yourself to see where you stand. Are there certain exercises you’re unable to do? What physical activities are you willing and open to doing? Will you need to buy exercise equipment or can you use household items? Also, consider where you are with your diet. Are there things you are willing to change or things you think it may be hard to live without? Once you see where you are, you’ll have a better idea of the things you’ll be discussing with those who assist you with your weight loss program. For starting points, you can try the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Planner.

Welcoming Atmosphere

In addition, you want to make sure that you choose a program that can encourage you and make you feel welcomed. After all, a supportive atmosphere can help stir you to make a change. While it is important to have someone to encourage you and push you to strive for the best, you also want someone who is understanding of your situation and won’t undermine you. Find someone that will listen to your concerns and peacefully work alongside you as they push you to reach your goals.

Do Your Research

Look at past testimonials and/or reviews of the program to see what previous or current clients have experienced in the program. Also, beware of the results that a program promises. See whether or not what they say is actually possible, especially if they promise outlandish results. Speaking of which, you also want to look at what the program is providing. Consider the following:

Do you have the time? Look into how (face-to-face, virtually, etc.) and how often the program. Would you be able to make it work with your schedule or will it add additional stress?

How confident are you? Your success in a program partially relies on your commitment. If you don’t believe you can stay committed and try your best, then your success may be limited as it relies on your mindset.

What does the program include and what does it take away? You want to make sure you understand what the program is asking you to do and why (i.e. if they suggest you cut down on foods of a certain category, tell you to do a specific exercise, etc.). When you understand the reason, you may be more likely to follow through.

Overall, you want the best for yourself. Let your attention be on your health and how you can better yourself. Don’t let anyone stop you from being motivated. Like our blog says, The First Step To Self Love: Focus On You. If you need assistance, be sure to consult your doctor or a specialist with your comments, concerns, and questions.
