March is National Nutrition Month®

This month we’re going back to the basics, focusing on the key food groups and reducing the confusion around carbs, proteins, and fats.

The media and all of the latest diet trends always make nutrition seem so complicated.

At Sweet Life Wellness, the goal is to reduce confusion and help you get back to relaxed, healthy eating patterns so you’re no longer struggling with food and what to eat and still staying within your calorie needs.

Put your best fork forward.

This month, focus on making small healthy choices every day, as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says, “Put your best fork forward.”

choose my plate.govEvery meal and every day is a new opportunity for making a healthy choice.  The goal isn’t to be perfect, but to create a mindful atmosphere around food and the choices we make each day.

A good place to start is with MyPlate, this government resources breaks down the plate to give a visual representation of portion sizes.  Think about filling half your plate with vegetables and fruits, and the other half with grains and proteins.

Divide your plate.

Thinking about dividing your plate up is a great way to visualize your nutritional needs, but all plates are not created equal, so be mindful of serving sizes.

Serving sizes are based on sex, age, and activity level, but below is a general chart for adult men and women.

Vegetables Fruits Grains Protein Dairy
Women 2 – 2 ½ cups 1 ½ – 2 cups 5-6 oz 5 – 5 ½ oz 3 cups
Men 2 ½ – 3 cups 2 cups 6-8 oz 5 ½ – 6 ½ oz 3 cups

Eat rainbow foods.

Another way to visualize healthy eating is to try to eat a rainbow of foods each day.

Having a variety of colors in your foods ensures you’re getting a wide range of nutrients and antioxidants and will focus on healthy produce instead of processed foods.
